Common Scams to Avoid
At Bari Karol Wojtyłan Airport, some unofficial taxi drivers may approach arriving passengers inside the terminal offering rides. To avoid this, always proceed directly to the official taxi rank outside the arrivals hall, where licensed, metered taxis queue. This is a common tactic at many airports. But is regularly reported here.
A known issue involves taxi drivers not using the meter and instead insisting on a fixed, inflated fare to the city center or other destinations. The proper response is to insist the meter be turned on ('il tassametro, per favore') before departure or to refuse the ride and find another taxi.
Some drivers may take unnecessarily long routes to run up the meter, with passengers unfamiliar with the area. To counter this, it is advisable to have a general idea of the route (e.g., the direct route to Bari Centrale station is relatively short) or use a navigation app to monitor the trip.
